Chihuahua Puppy Health
The Chihuahua is a breed of dog that falls in the category of amazingly miniature or tiny ones. You will be surprised to see the exceedingly delicate and small creatures that come under the Chihuahua banner. Chihuahuas are sweet, yet ferocious creatures, and make great pets, only if you are ready to take proper care of them and give them the necessary attention.
Here are some steps that you just must follow in case you are planning to add a Chihuahua to the family, or at least, to your home: -
• The first step that comes in while ensuring chihuahua puppy health is to see that your Chihuahua is free of any possibility of a disease striking it (something that its kind is very prone to, especially at a young age), with the help of the correct vaccinations given to it by the veterinary doctor on a regular yearly basis.
• A very important facet of Chihuahua puppy health is to make sure you find out from the breeder about the kind of screening that your Chihuahua has undergone in order to avoid things like weak knees, colds etc., and see that you get it all checked from your vet.
• See that your Chihuahua eats 3 small meals a day, and provide him with dog food that includes meat as the main ingredient, with crude protein and crude fat ratios of at least 20 and 30 percent respectively, and fiber content 4 percent or less.
• Give your Chihuahua enough exercise on a daily basis. Since this breed of dogs is one that falls in the “active” category, a short walk around the apartment block will be enough, but will definitely not go amiss.
• While ensuring correct Chihuahua puppy health, see that you bathe your Chihuahua at least on a monthly basis and more frequently so if it’s a long haired one, seeing that you don’t allow water to enter its ears, as this may lead to infections. Also remember to ensure that you keep its coat nice and clean with the use of a soft brush. Long Haired Chihuahuas will require daily brushing and grooming. Remember to keep your Chihuahua free of any fleas or other little insects, through the means of vet-approved flea control products.
• Train your Chihuahua with a gentle, but firm hand. See that it learns to socialize well with kids and other dogs.
• When you take your Chihuahua for a walk, ensure that the temperature is high enough for it to bear. If it is below 40 degrees F. then see that it is protected with a sweater, and if below 35 degree, then don’t take it out at all, for dogs of its kind are quite sensitive to cold.
• Consider buying a full harness for your Chihuahua, instead of a mere collar and leash. This will protect its delicate neck during walks, and also prevent the trachea from collapsing.
• Remember that Chihuahuas are quite prone to various inherent disorders, and hence, do everything you can in order to prevent them from suffering. These disorders include luxation or dislocation of the patella (knee joint), hypoglycemia, collapsed trachea etc.
• And lastly, remember to pet the little creature often. It needs your love and affection, and it is your responsibility to shower more than enough of it onto it, in order to ensure a devoted pet and an unbreakable bond between the two of you.
All these aspects need to be considered when it comes to Chihuahua puppy health, and actually need to be followed quite religiously for your little dog to live a healthy, happy life, and provide you with mutual adoration and tenderness.
