The Chihuahua is a petite, sweet-looking breed of dog that has been labeled after the American state where it was first discovered in the year 1850. The history of the development of this breed is quite tricky to trace back. It is mostly determined on speculation, but there is enough substantiation in the form of folklore and legend to prove that it is, without a doubt, quite an early breed, originating from Pre-Columbian Mexico, and outdates any other breed in the Americas. It is said that Chihuahuas descend from Techichis, which used to be companion dogs favored by the Toltecs, and developed through breeding with tiny Chinese dogs brought to the American continents by the Spaniards.

Chihuahuas have a very confusing quality when it comes to their color. Categorizing them according to their color is quite a knotty process, purely because of the wide range of potential possibilities. They could have single, solid hues, ranging from red, cream, chocolate, blue and black. However, fawn is considered to be the classic color for a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas could even be patterned in various ways, from Irish, Piebald and white spotting to brindle, masks and merle, or even various tan points. While no hue or pattern is considered above the others, some are believed to be relatively rarer than the rest.

There is a huge conflict going on about the particular brand of Chihuahuas called “merle” Chihuahuas. Merle patterning, as mentioned above, is a kind wherein the coat of the dog is colored in two different tones or shades, with irregular, blurred stripes on it. While some organizations refuse to consider merle Chihuahuas to be an integral type of the same particular breed, others stoutly disagree.

It is said that merle Chihuahuas are more prone to various diseases and disorders than others of their breed, but many people tend to disagree on this account. In their opinion, the pattern on the merle Chihuahua’s coat cannot be responsible for their proneness or susceptibility towards any disease or disorder as such. It is argued to be an innate inclination, which is quite individualistic in nature, and has nothing to do with the patterning of the colors on the coat of a merle Chihuahua.

Whatever one believes, though, whether it is any different kind of Chihuahua, or a merle Chihuahua that you wish to keep as pet, is entirely your decision. If you believe merle Chihuahuas look beautiful and will make great pets and then you are most welcome to keep them so, and if not, well, you have a wide range of others to choose from.
