Chihuahua Breeding
There are many things to be kept in mind if you are planning to breed your little Chihuahua. You will discover various aspects to Chihuahua breeding, and it is your responsibility to see that they are fulfilled in a satisfactory manner. Here are some basic pointers for you to move in the right direction.
Fundamental laws of Chihuahua breeding -
* It is necessary, first of all, for you to determine if your Chihuahua is mature and physically healthy enough to be bred. You could judge her against the breed standard in order to achieve correct comparison. If she is fit, she can be bred. Apart from this, Chihuahua breeding requires you to determine whether the bitch is worthy enough of being bred, and if she has a problem of some sort that would affect her during or after pregnancy.
* It is important for you to find a suitable breeding partner for your bitch; one who is healthy and fit in every way. He should be robust, active and energetic.
* Brucellosis is a disorder that tends to affect many Chihuahuas, and hence, it is necessary for you to get both, the dog and the bitch, tested for the same. Both should test negative.
* See that the breeding takes place under the supervision of an experienced and expert breeder.
* You could get a vet to test your bitch on the 30th day or so, by palpitating her in a gentle way. See that this process takes place only during the period between the 30th and the 32nd day.
It would also be advisable not to try it yourself, or allow any other layperson to do it either, or you might hurt the fetuses. Another, more expensive method is to use the ultrasound on her.
* One of the most important aspects of Chihuahua breeding is the food that you provide to your pregnant Chihuahua. Be careful to choose only the foods that are good for her, and see that you avoid anything that harms her in any way.
* You also need to create a secure box for the whelping to take place, which allows the temperature to be regulated. This is very important for newborns.
* See that you record the Chihuahua’s temperature twice a day; once in the morning, and once in the evening, from the 58th day or so onward. They will differ in terms of degree. However, when the temperature falls below 101 F to around 98 F, you ought to realize that she is about to give birth within the next 24 hours.
* You will also need to weigh the puppies twice a day, and hence you will require weighing scales for the same.
* If, for some reason, your Chihuahua is unable to nurse the puppies after they are born, then you will have to keep a milk substitute ready for them before the birth, administer the warm food on them through the means of a dropper, a needle-less syringe, or a tube. It is, however, advisable for experienced breeders only to take a tube in use.
* Remember that a nice, balanced puppy diet, available in large supermarkets, is best for your puppies. Cow’s milk is not supposed to be given, and goat’s milk is considerably digestible.
* See that you look after the Chihuahua well, before and after the whelping takes place.
You will find quite a few books on Chihuahua breeding in various stores. Pick one up, if you wish, and follow it religiously. Take the help of a good vet too, and see that you are successful in creating a new generation of offspring, through the means of careful and perfect Chihuahua breeding.
