Chihuahuas are dogs that fall into the ‘status symbol’ category. If you own a Chihuahua, then you are considered to be of high status, apparently. Many celebrities own Chihuahuas as pets, and have set a trend of keeping them so, which a lot of people are following. However, as goes with any other breed of dogs, Chihuahuas should be purchased keeping many things in mind, especially if you are planning to buy a young Chihuahua puppy.

Chihuahua puppy ought to be bought only from a good, responsible and ethical breeder, who gives the required amount of care to them, and pays careful attention to their physical, mental and emotional needs. You can be sure about the attributes of the Chihuahua puppy that you are planning to buy only if the breeder is a responsible one.

Buying a Chihuahua puppy is definitely not child’s play. You will have to take extra care while selecting the right one for you, because apart from their being inherently frail creatures who are prone to various diseases, they also come in a variety of appearances and temperaments. You would do best to choose a Chihuahua puppy that has a personality much akin to your own, in order to reduce the possibility of your not mixing well with it. Chihuahua Puppies fall in three basic categories when it comes to personality:

a.) Normal
b.) Independent and/or Dominant
c.) Submissive

There are ways and means of determining the personality of a Chihuahua puppy. You would be wise to go through the following steps if you really want to make the perfect choice.

1. Restrain the puppy gently on the ground on its back for about 20 seconds. See how it reacts. If it:

(i) Fights for a couple of seconds and then submits, then it is a “Normal” puppy.
(ii) Fights or whines for the entire span of time, then it are an “Independent” and/or “Dominant” puppy.
(iii) Lays there, licking your hand and does not even attempt to fight, then it is a “Submissive” puppy.

The same rules apply for the rest of the steps of the personality test:

2. Lift the puppy off the ground for a few seconds, say around the same amount of time as before, and observe how it reacts.

3. Try to catch the puppy’s attention by tapping your leg and walking in the opposite direction, or jangling a set of keys at a particular distance from him. The former step should cause the “Dominant” Chihuahua puppy to run at you and try to bite your shoe, the “Independent” one to stay exactly where it was, and avoid you, the “Normal” one to follow your friendly voice as and when you call out, and the “Submissive” one to follow, but with its tail between its legs. The same rules will apply for the latter one.

4. Clap your hands softly while kneeling down on the ground, and call the Chihuahua puppy to you in the friendliest and most welcoming of voices. See how the puppy reacts to you. Observe which of the above mentioned responses it makes to you.

It is quite necessary that each puppy gives this test twice, just to be on the safer side, and individually, too. You could record each encounter with each puppy, either in a notebook or on video. Remember, though, that there is no “right” or “wrong” response in this test. It merely tests the dog’s personality, and hence, gives you an indication whether the puppy will actually suit you or not. However, the Chihuahua puppies that score “Normal” in most of the little experiments are best suited for everyone, apart from being the safest bet.

Also remember to perform a general health inspection on the Chihuahua puppy that you are planning to buy. You really don’t want to end up with a delicate and unhealthy pet, do you? Besides, once you are done with your own inspections, and have purchased the right pup for yourself, it is necessary for you to have a detailed health inspection done immediately from a veterinary doctor, during the normal 48-hour money back guarantee period that professional and responsible breeders provide.
